Scholarship News, and more!

November 29, 2023

Congratulations to Level One student Jenny Duong, the 2023 recipient of The Bruce Hotel Scholarship for Emerging BIPOC Chefs!

Using food as an outlet for creativity has inspired Jenny to pursue a career in the culinary arts, with a long term goal of being a small business owner.

The Bruce Hotel Scholarship, generously funded by owner Jennifer Birmingham, allows Jenny to “attend the School of my choice, expand on my knowledge through an immersive curriculum, and develop confidence in my skill set”.  Jenny can invest in her long-term happiness and focus on her education priorities thanks to the financial support provided by this Scholarship, which covers Tuition fees for the full 32 Week Program.

In her application, Jenny also explained:

As a woman of Vietnamese heritage, I understand the lack of diversity in the workplace and the challenges of finding employment for people of colour.  Because of this issue, I have volunteered my time to support the S.T.E.M. program at WEST, a community-based training organization whose mission is improving the employability of visible minority women … As a person of diversity, I aim to employ others from the BIPOC community and showcase their strengths, talents, and the uniqueness of each individual’s background.”

Congratulations Jenny!

What better way to fight hunger than with an apron, the uniform of a cook?

Our limited edition 40th Anniversary Stratford Chefs School Apron is the perfect gift for the cook in your life (or yourself!). This beautifully crafted apron was created by Cooks Who Feed, an organization that fights hunger with each apron sold. 1 apron = 100 meals.

We’re thrilled to partner with Cooks Who Feed to create a stylish, functional, and eco-friendly 40th Anniversary Stratford Chefs School apron, and support the important mission to fight hunger through reducing food waste.

Limited quantity are now available for purchase at our Administration office while supplies last. | $70 each including HST

The model for Cooks Who Feed is 1 apron = 100 meals. This means, for every apron sold, 100 nutritious meals are provided to those in need, through partnerships with charitable organizations that rescue surplus food to provide immediate hunger relief. Over 1/3 of profits go to charity partners to fulfill the 1 apron = 100 meals model.

Each apron is ethically produced, supporting underprivileged women in India by giving them fair trade employment. All Cooks Who Feed apron production takes place in Delhi, India with a focus to hire women who live in poverty and provide them with a safe work environment, paid training, a living wage, and income security.

The intersection of education, hospitality and passion at which the SCS Staff live and work is phenomenal, and the dedication and care that they each bring to every aspect of their role at the Chefs School is the reason that this institution is so special. I’ve learned so very much about this industry and about life while I’ve been here, but the biggest lesson I will take away from any of this is the importance of giving a damn. All of you give a damn, and it has changed lives at this place since 1983.”

Jonathon Farrell | Stratford Chefs School Class of 2023 Valedictorian

The Stratford Chefs School provides the training to create world-class chefs who are comfortable working in any kitchen environment. Its immersive, approachable, interactive curriculum provided me with the tools and confidence that I needed early on in my career to make the transition from the school setting to the workforce. Perhaps most important to me are the lasting friendships that were made, the ongoing support from the SCS community, and exciting collaborations with other alumni.”

Alondra Galvez | Owner/Chef, El Cactus Taco Shop | Stratford Chefs School Class of 2003

The Stratford Chefs School offers an unparalleled learning environment in which students are immersed in a hands-on, realistic approach of what to expect in the culinary industry. My experience at the Stratford Chefs School exposed me to various cuisines, a limitless spectrum of cooking techniques, and an opportunity to work directly with renowned chefs. The calibre of the instructors, and their cumulative experience in the field, laid the foundation on which I could build the confidence I needed in order to pursue my career path.”

Yva Santini | Chef, The Flour Mill, St. Marys | Stratford Chefs School Class of 2009

At the Chefs School, I was given the opportunity to challenge myself, and expand the limits of my culinary skill and knowledge. SCS gave me the ability to trust in my own skill and allowed me to expand my knowledge. Now I confidently pass that skill and knowledge to my students.”
